Corten Steel Fence Ideas for Australian Homes and Gardens

Corten steel fence panels can create privacy, divide garden areas and add a strong architectural feature. At COR10 Steel Byron Bay, we usually make fence panels from 2 mm to 3 mm Corten steel, with usual fence heights from 1.2 m to 1.8 m and customised panel lengths to suit individual site measurements.

We make solid panels, laser cut designs and customised images. Installation can use pre drilled screw fixing or clips that allow panels to clip or slide onto suitable support posts.

Custom Corten steel fence panels

Most of our Corten fence panels are made around site measurements rather than fixed retail sizes.

Panel length can be adjusted to suit a boundary, garden, patio or architectural feature. Custom sizing also helps when a fence needs to work around existing structures, gates or changes in ground level.

One recent COR10 project used a 2260 mm wide by 1000 mm high panel with a custom tree branch design. The pattern was cut through the panel to create a decorative boundary with open areas for light and visibility.

The project used a different height from our usual fence range because the panel was designed specifically for that site.

Laser cut Corten fence designs

We can create Corten panels with customised patterns, images and artwork.

A customer can request a suitable image or design and we can turn it into a laser cut panel. Organic patterns, geometric shapes, logos and custom artwork can all create different visual results.

Pattern density changes how a fence functions. More solid areas provide stronger screening, while larger openings allow more light through. Open designs can also create changing shadows across paving, walls and planting.

SSAB states that COR-TEN weathering steel sheets can be perforated with customised shapes, text, logos and images. SSAB also explains how perforated designs can create different effects through light and shadow.

French knot Corten fence panels

We recently produced a customised French knot style Corten fence panel as another example of our design work.

We can produce this type of pattern in different sizes to suit individual site requirements. Pattern density can be changed according to the level of screening and visual openness needed for a project.

Corten fence designs for privacy

Privacy depends on viewing angle, panel position and pattern density as much as fence height.

A solid panel provides stronger visual separation. A laser cut panel can reduce direct views while allowing more light through. A partly screened design can protect a patio or outdoor seating area without completely closing off the garden.

We consider nearby windows, balconies, seating areas and changes in ground level when planning a fence because these details can change sight lines.

A design that works well along a side boundary may not provide the same result at a front boundary or beside a patio.

Corten fences for gardens and outdoor living

We use Corten fencing to separate lawns, planting beds, pathways and outdoor rooms while keeping the fence connected to the wider landscape.

A long panel can create a strong background for planting. A lower section can define a garden bed. A taller screen can provide privacy around an outdoor living area. A decorative section can hide bins, equipment or other service areas.

Corten’s brown patina also works well with green planting. Grasses can soften long sections, while shrubs and trees can break up larger areas of steel.

Planting needs enough space around panels for airflow and drainage. SSAB notes that direct contact with vegetation can affect colour development and that sheltered damp conditions can produce different patina results.

Corten fence panels for patios and pool areas

We can design Corten panels around patios, courtyards and outdoor living areas.

A solid panel can give stronger separation from neighbouring properties. A laser cut design can provide screening without blocking all light. A partly screened boundary can protect a seating area while keeping part of the surrounding garden visible.

Pool projects need an additional safety check. A decorative Corten panel should not automatically be treated as a compliant pool barrier. Local pool fencing requirements should be confirmed before fabrication.

Choosing Corten panel size and thickness

We select panel dimensions around each project’s site requirements.

Large panels can reduce visible joins but can require more attention to support. Smaller panels can work better around corners, gates and changes in boundary direction.

Thickness also needs to match the panel design and site conditions. A small decorative panel has different requirements from a large exposed panel. Pattern design, panel dimensions, wind exposure, fixing method and support all influence the final specification.

Our recent tree branch project shows how a custom panel can be produced around an individual site’s dimensions instead of relying on a fixed retail size.

Corten fence installation options

We offer different installation methods depending on the project.

Panels can have pre drilled holes for screws, allowing them to attach to suitable support posts. We can also provide support posts as part of a custom fence project.

Another option uses clips instead of pre drilled holes. Panels can clip or slide onto suitable existing support posts when the support system allows it.

One recent COR10 project used this clip method. The panel was designed with clips along its edge so it could connect to its support structure without visible fixing holes through the face of the panel.

This option can suit projects where suitable existing posts are being retained or where a cleaner panel face is preferred.

Corten fence posts and support

We plan panel design and support together.

Posts transfer panel loads into their supporting structure. Panel dimensions, thickness, fixing method and site exposure all influence support requirements.

Large panels can experience greater wind forces because they present more surface area. Support should therefore be considered before panel fabrication rather than added as a separate decision later.

Where required, we can supply support posts as part of a Corten fence project.

Corten steel weathering and patina

Corten develops its characteristic weathered surface through exposure to alternating wet and dry conditions.

Patina colour does not develop at one fixed rate. SSAB explains that atmospheric conditions and surrounding air quality affect oxidation and final colour. Frequent wet and dry cycles can speed oxidation, while sheltered damp conditions can produce a different result.

Water movement also matters. SSAB recommends allowing water to run off freely and preventing conditions where moisture remains trapped against Corten surfaces.

For a fence, drainage and airflow therefore form part of the design.

Corten fence drainage and rust runoff

Early weathering can produce brown runoff from Corten steel.

Runoff can reach paving, concrete, stone and other surfaces below a fence. Light coloured surfaces can show staining more clearly.

Perforated panels can create additional runoff paths through cut sections. SSAB notes that runoff from perforations can affect surrounding surfaces and patina development.

At COR10, we consider panel position, ground levels and drainage before fabrication so water has a suitable path away from the installation.

Corten steel fences in coastal areas

Coastal projects need closer attention to exposure, moisture, airflow and drainage.

SSAB’s published recommendations for architects advise avoiding salt rich environments and long term humidity when using weathering steel. Its guidance also states that COR-TEN structures should be at least 200 metres from the shoreline of seawater. That recommendation comes from SSAB’s weathering steel guidance and should be considered alongside the actual project conditions and material specification.

At COR10, we consider the site’s location and exposure before fabrication. A coastal project should not be specified from appearance alone because weathering behaviour depends on the local environment.

Corten fences in Byron Bay

For residential projects covered by Chapter D1 of the Byron Shire Development Control Plan, fencing requirements include specific height controls.

The current Chapter D1 was adopted on 27 January 2026 and became effective on 23 February 2026. Chapter D1 applies to residential accommodation development in specified Residential, Village, Mixed Use, Business, Industrial and Special Purpose zones. (Byron Shire Council)

For sites covered by these provisions, the DCP states that fence heights should not exceed 1.2 metres for front fences, 1.2 metres within the building line setback and 1.8 metres for the remainder of side fences, and 1.8 metres for rear fences. A higher front fence can be permitted in certain circumstances, with additional requirements. (Byron Shire Council)

For example, a front fence higher than 1.2 metres can have to include at least 50% visual permeability above 1.2 metres under the conditions set out in Chapter D1. (Byron Shire Council)

These provisions apply to properties covered by Chapter D1. Other properties and other councils can have different requirements, so local planning controls should be checked before fabrication.

Corten fence designs with gates

We can design gates to work with Corten fence panels as one connected system.

A laser cut pattern can continue from fence panels onto a pedestrian gate. A solid gate can provide stronger screening.

A driveway gate can use matching Corten artwork to connect separate sections of a boundary.

Gate size, support, hardware and clearance should be considered before fabrication so the fence and gate work together.

Custom Corten fence designs for individual properties

Custom fabrication gives us more freedom to work around real site conditions.

We can adjust panel length, create custom patterns and incorporate requested images. We can use pre drilled screw fixing or clip and slide installation where suitable. Support posts can also be supplied.

Our tree branch and French knot projects show two different ways we can approach custom Corten fencing. One uses an organic branch pattern, while the other uses a distinctive decorative pattern.

The result is a fence designed around the property rather than a standard panel selected first and modified later.

How we plan a Corten steel fence

We start with the site and its purpose.

We look at boundary measurements, privacy requirements, viewing angles, existing structures and changes in ground level. We then select a panel design and installation approach that fits those conditions.

Drainage and runoff are considered before fabrication. Support posts and fixing points are planned around panel dimensions and site exposure.

For Byron Bay projects, we also consider the relevant local planning requirements before finalising fence height and layout.

Corten steel fence ideas for modern Australian homes

We use Corten fencing to connect architecture and landscaping through material, pattern and colour.

A clean geometric design can suit modern architecture. An organic pattern can connect with gardens and planting. A solid section can provide stronger privacy, while a cut section can keep more light and openness.

Concrete, brick, timber and planting can all work alongside Corten. SSAB also highlights combinations of COR-TEN steel with concrete, brick and wood in architectural applications.

Our recent tree branch and French knot projects show how custom patterns can create different results from the same weathering steel material.
